GABRIEL
In Her Mom's Words

Gabriel was a Borzoi-Newfoundland cross. She was dumped on the street as a just-weaned puppy, eluded animal control officers for three weeks, and finally ended up in the Palo Alto, CA, shelter where we found each other.

From the day I brought her home, she was sweet and generous with her affection. Over time, she blossomed into a dog with an unusual amount of presence and a hilariously theatrical bent.

My sweet girl now plays at the Rainbow Bridge. She lit up the lives of many people and will forever remain at the center of my heart.

RESCUE

Gabriel had an uncanny knack for rescue. Almost from the day she arrived here, she began collecting strays. Most were neighborhood dogs who had gotten out accidentially. Some were injured or weary wanderers who needed help to get home. A few had been abandoned. Gabe managed to rescue several ill or trapped cats and one hapless "house" bunny on the loose. In the neighbohood, Gabriel's gate became the place to start if your dog were missing or you had come upon a stray. Folks would come by and check to see who was new at the gate. Some of the animal control officers knew the address by heart.

Almost everything I know about rescue I learned from Gabe. She especially taught me how desperately our pets will struggle to find a welcome home.
